Happy New Year (playing catchup)

Happy 2014! I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season. Ours has been pretty busy but fun. Christmas we spent with my family and everyone enjoyed all their presents. Bub and I received archery sets but we've only got to shoot a few times, mostly because of the rain. Button's been enjoying her new barn and dollhouse and Bub's favorite present is the Kindle Fire my sister got him (she spoils him). 

Yesterday for New Year's Eve we took the kids to the local childrens museum to their New Year's Noon party. It was super crowded but they had fun. At noon, the museum does a countdown and then confetti and toys fall out of balls hanging from the ceiling. They have outdoor carnival games and then all the regular museum exhibits too. This is the 3rd time we've gone and Bub likes it. Then last night the kids and I went to dinner with my parents and sister and had some seafood. It was a long wait but the food was good. We made it home early and not one of the three of us saw the new year come in. I think BT was the only one awake.

Today we had lunch with my parents and spent some more time over there since my sister is going back home this afternoon. It's been a fairly quiet day. We watched LSU play and then we left before she did since Button was desperately in need of a nap. My plans for the rest of the day include doing nothing. It's been a whirlwind of activity since winter break started and I think we need some downtime at home. And anyway I think we need to rest up since tomorrow starts day 1 of a preliminary attempt at potty training. I have a feeling tomorrow is going to involve a lot of cleaning up.

Happy Halloween!

It's suppose to rain here but my city didn't reschedule trick or treating so that is still on for tonight. We took them last night to a nearby neighborhood that was trick or treating just in case it does rain. So they at least got a little in. Button was a bit confused but happy to see candy in her bag. She did a little dance later when she got to eat some. Bub, as always, had a good time. If it isn't raining tonight, I will take them for a lap around our neighborhood but at least they did a little this Halloween rain or not.

BT carved pumpkins Tuesday and they turned out great! Each matches a kid's costume. Bub is a ninja and Button is Cinderella. I think he did an excellent job.

Happy Memorial Day!

It's just me and Button today for the most part. BT ended up opening at work so he will be home tonight for a change. And Bub had school today which is weird but it's their last week so I guess that is why. So far I've done the kids' laundry and made Rice Krispie Treats and made Button take a nap in her own room. I wanted a quiet lazy day for a change. Later after I pick Bub up from school I think we will go get a snowball and sit outside for a while. Then we will all go over to my parent's house for dinner.

Christmas is my favorite holiday mostly because birthdays don't count. No, but really I do love the holiday. My next favorite would be Easter, I suppose. I love the traditions of holidays and the excitement behind them.

Happy Mother's Day

This is my 7th Mother's Day and my 2nd as a mother of two. My first was pretty exciting as was my first one with Button. Both are milestones. Not that I don't enjoy the other ones but, as with everything, the first time is the most exciting.

This year we are doing our usual thing of church but we are having a crab and shrimp boil at my parent's house afterward. So that should be fun.

Little peacock

Thanks again to Pinterest for the idea of Button's peacock costume. I first saw the idea when I was pregnant with her and I knew that is what I wanted to do. I looked at many tutorials but in the end I made a tutu using teal, blue and brown tulle and added some teal and peacock feathers to the back to make the "tail." I bought a dark blue onesie for her to wear underneath.

I decided to make her a simple headband using the stretchy kind and added a small peacock feather as well as a few leftovers from the peacock thing I had bought. I think it was meant to be used for bouquets but I took it apart and used the pieces. It worked because she is so small that I couldn't have anything really big on her back and head.

Something else I bought was some skin tone colored knee high socks. I shortened the toe to fit her but in the end it was warm enough that she didn't need them though after the sun went down I should have put them on her.

I'm pretty proud of the whole things. This will probably be the only time I make her costume for her but I think I did alright this year.

BT and I managed to stay just past midnight and then we went to bed.  We didn't go anywhere for New Year's Eve, just stayed in and played video games and I read a little bit.  Nothing exciting.  But that's ok.  Today we are going to my parent's for New Years dinner which BT is cooking and hanging out.  But right now I'm enjoying a wonderful mimosa.

Late night shopping

I failed at posting over the holiday.  To be fair I didn't have my own computer and didn't feel like blogging on my mother-in-law's.  But it was a nice holiday with lots of food and lots of naps.  I went to Toy 'R Us late Thursday night with my sister-in-law.  And it was crazy.  I grossly underestimated the amount of people who would be there.  I don't know why.  But it was a lot.  It only took a 1/2 hour to get into the store, but it was a 2 1/2 hour wait to check out.  I got everything I wanted to get and I've done all my son's shopping.  My sister-in-law wasn't so lucky and couldn't find a couple of things she wanted.  But all in all it was worth it and I would do it again.  Except maybe with a daiquiri in hand.

Happy Thanksgiving to my US readers!  I'm at my in-laws eating like a mad woman and regretting it later.

I am thankful for my wonderful husband and our beautiful and sweet little boy.  I am thankful for the rest of my family for being so fabulous.   And I am thankful for my job, my friends, both in real life and the ones I've made through my blog.  I hope you have a happy and delicious day.  Gobble, gobble.

The Holidays

eople seem to be posting about the holidays now.  I guess since we have successfully made it to November, everyone is getting anxious for the big show of the year.  My family, unlike my husband's family, has very little in the way of big traditions.  For Thanksgiving, we sometimes spent it at our house and sometimes we drove to my aunt and uncle's house.  It just depended.  On what I really don't know.  But my parents had it worked out and I really didn't care.  We always had turkey and all the fixings.  For Christmas, we decorated the tree after Thanksgiving and we got to open one present a piece Christmas Eve and then we woke up the next day and opened the rest.  There was very little ceremony to the whole thing.  And sometimes we stayed home and sometimes we went to my aunt and uncle's.  We had ham and all the fixings and the day was spent playing with our new stuff.  But we always spent it together.

Once BT and I moved in together, things began changing.  I think the first year we lived together we spent Christmas apart with our families or maybe that was Thanksgiving.  I know we did Thanksgiving apart for a few years.  And then we started spending Christmas Eve at his parent's house and then driving Christmas day to my parent's house.  It started to become too much.  BT never wanted to leave his parent's and I was anxious to see my family and it was overwhelming.  I decided that there was no way I was going to do all this driving when we had kids because then it really would be too much.  So at some point we instituted an alternating pattern.  One year we did Thanksgiving with his family and Christmas with mine and then the next year we switched: Christmas with his family and Thanksgiving with mine.  And it has worked out for us.  I don't know how our parents like it.  They accepted it anyway.  And they get a full holiday with their grandson instead of just a half a day otherwise.  I could not even imagine trying to drag Bub away on Christmas Day to go to someone else's house.  My brother-in-law and his wife seem to have fallen into our pattern as well so some holidays my mother-in-law gets to have all her children and grandchildren at her house which she loves.  And my sister comes down when it is my parent's Christmas so then my mom gets to have her daughters and grandson as well.

So far I think this has worked out for everybody or at least no one has complained to my face.  I think it takes the pressure off of the holidays for the families and it just makes it so much easier.

I know I haven't been posting but I hope everyone is having a fun, spooky and safe Halloween.  We went to a local old-fashioned Cajun village and did some fun Halloween activities including treat or treating and then carved pumpkins at our house,  then had treat or treating Saturday night in our town.  So it was a very fun and full day.

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter all! 

We had a good one this year.  My in-laws came in on Saturday night and the little boy was so excited to see them.  We woke up this morning and Bub opened his basket and ooh'd and ah'd over his presents which included a lot of bubble things.  We also got him Ponyo and My Neighbor Totoro (I've been looking for it on DVD for year and finally they re-released it or something). 

Then we went to my parent's house to do an Easter egg hunt.  They were all plastic eggs filled with candy or toys.  He throws too hard for real eggs right now. 

BT cooked a great Easter lunch with a crowned roast of pork, crawfish and sausage dressing, roasted asparagus, and a strawberry spinach salad.  Yum!  And we played outside and talked and had a nice visit. 

Then everyone left.  And we put on Ponyo in the bedroom and I fell asleep but no one else did.  So we had a nice quiet afternoon/evening.  Perfect.
